Datalink for FRS Repair Tutorial

Important Notes

This tutorial provides support after the download and installation of Datalink for FRS. If this has not been done or you are just looking to download the Datalink for FRS software, see the FRS Note-taking Software article for the download link.



Datalink for FRS requires a working WMDC (Windows Mobile Device Center) connection to properly export and import the database file before and after changes have been made, if WMDC does not automatically come up and show a good connection to the handheld with a green check mark, please follow the WMDC repair tutorial.

Juniper System's "Mobile Connect" software does not fully work with Datalink for FRS and will not import/export the database file between the Allegro CX/MX/or 2 and the PC the device is connected to. "Mobile Connect" only allows for Windows to see the internal hard drive of the Allegro like a USB thumb drive. This only allows FRS map files that have been automatically created in the .csv Excel file format during harvest, or other map files exported from within FRS, to be copied and transferred over to the PC. Note: if you are encountering an error message stating,"Unable to open FRS registry key on handheld!" this error message indicates that a compatible version of FRS Note Taking is not installed and/or registered on the connected handheld computer. You will need to download and install a registered version of FRS Note Taking from the following article: https://harvestmaster.com/support/article/14647.


Step 1: Hotfix Patch

The first step is to make sure that Windows can properly open and interface with the database file copied to the PC from the handheld. This is ensured through the installation of a custom "Hotfix DLL" file. If Windows Mobile Device Center is working and Datalink for FRS will not open or function properly, please download the "Hotfix Patch DLL" and "Hotfix Patch Instructions" from the table below and follow the outlined steps in the instructions document as the first step in repairing Datalink for FRS.

If Datalink for FRS still fails to function properly after following these instructions, proceed to Step 2.         
                                           

Step 2: .Net Framework 3.5 SP1

The second step is to determine if the right version of the .NET framework is installed and enabled. This is a Microsoft distributed software that is required Datalink for FRS to function. To check if .NET version 3.5 is installed and enabled, follow the steps below:

You can enable the .NET Framework 3.5 through the Windows Control Panel. This option requires an internet connection.

  1. Press the Windows key, type “Windows Features,” and select Enter. The Turn Windows features on or off dialog box appears.
  2. Select the .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) check box, select OK, and reboot your computer if prompted.

You don't need to select the child items for Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) HTTP Activation and Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) Non-HTTP Activation unless you're a developer or server administrator who requires this functionality. If the .Net Framework 3.5 is not installed or an available option to enable from this menu then it can be downloaded and installed from the following web page: http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/e/20e90413-712f-438c-988e-fdaa79a8ac3d/dotnetfx35.exe 

Step 3: Other Required Microsoft Distributed Programs & Versions

If Datalink for FRS still fails to start up properly after applying the hotfix patch and ensuring that the .NET 3.5 framework is installed and enabled, then search Windows for the Control Panel. Under the programs category select "Uninstall a Program," and uninstall both the 32 and 64 bit versions of C++ 2008, C++ 2010, and SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2. Once these programs have been uninstalled, reinstall both the 32 and 64 bit versions of each linked downloads below:  

Note: You will need administrative rights to both uninstall and reinstall these programs.
